Kyle Martinez
Abstract painter exploring growth, grief, repressed emotion, and becoming through process-driven work.
After a decade working as a software developer, I returned to painting and found something I always longed for but could no longer ignore.
My work begins without a plan. Layers are added, obscured, scraped away, and rediscovered until something unexpected emerges. Rather than illustrating a predetermined idea, I use painting as a process of exploration and flow.
Themes of growth, grief, contradiction, healing, and transformation often appear in the work long before I recognize them myself.
Each piece is both an artifact of that process and an invitation for viewers to discover their own meaning within it.
Based in Louisiana.
My Approach
My paintings begin without sketches, plans, or predetermined outcomes.
Rather than pursuing an image, I follow a process of response.
Layers are built, obscured, revisited, and transformed until something unexpected reveals itself.
What emerges often reflects themes I only recognize afterward
—growth, grief, contradiction, healing, memory, and becoming.
The work is less about arriving at answers and more about creating space for discovery.
Trusting The Process
Each mark informs the next. I rarely begin with a destination, allowing the painting to evolve through intuition, experimentation, and revision.
Unearthing Meaning
Meaning is often discovered rather than planned. Many of the themes within the work become visible only after the painting is complete.
